Blog > The Basin, Rottnest Island – Everything you need to know

One of Western Australia’s best-kept secrets is Wadjemup / Rottnest Island, a short flight or ferry ride from Perth.
The Basin Beach has a rugged ledge and powder-soft sand

Rottnest Island has always been a favourite of locals. However, it has quickly become a popular vacation spot for visitors from other states and countries.

The Basin between Geordie Bay and Thompson Bay on Rottnest Island is a great spot to relax. Enjoy the sand between your toes and the salt on your skin.

The best nature surrounds the Basin, both above and below the waves.

A short walk from Thomson Bay Settlement and located on the island’s north side, The Basin is protected from the infamous Freo Doctor winds in summer.

Before you explore this stunning destination, ensure you have all the important information about the Basin.

Snorkel in safety

Rottnest beaches are universally adored, and the beaches surrounding The Basin are no exception. An easy bike ride or 10-minute walk from Thomson Bay, the Basin’s tidal pools are fringed with natural white sandy beaches and surrounded by a long reef.

Sheltered by pristine coral reef systems, the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean provide a haven for snorkelers. See abundant colourful fish and a beautiful array of purple, pink, and brown coral.

Visibility is often excellent, and The Basin features a natural rock pool protected by a reef, making it a safe and calm environment for beginners and families.

For more experienced swimmers and divers, you can swim out into the bay and explore the deeper parts of this natural wonder. You might even spot the occasional stingray or octopus hiding among the rocks.

Avoid stepping on or touching the coral, and take care not to disturb the marine life.

Nearby facilities

The basin, with nearby accessible toilets, showers, and BBQ facilities just five minutes away, is perfect for a family day out.

The shallow waters are ideal for a cooling swim, snorkelling, paddle boarding, and for children.

No snorkel gear? No worries – you can still experience this underwater wonderland as snorkel and flipper sets are available for hire.

In peak season between November to January, WA’s surf lifesavers patrol beaches on weekends.
